SOUTHWEST CENTER FOR HEALTHY JOINTS

Renovation for Medical Offices / Oak Lawn, Illinois

This 10,000 square foot building, located in Oak Lawn, a southwest suburb of Chicago, involved a gut renovation and conversion of an existing retail building into a medical office building for a group of orthopedic surgeons. The practice, Southwest Center for Healthy Joints, asked FDA to lower the basement in order to create business offices, a hydrotherapy room, an occupational therapy room and a large physical therapy area.

FDA designed a new open stair and added an elevator to connect the basement and the first floor. The open reception area has large windows which flood the space with light and takes advantage of the volume created by the existing glu-lam roof beams. The first floor was completely renovated with transom windows at the perimeter exam rooms and physician offices that "borrow" light from the exterior into the open corridors and nurses' desk.
